We are currently hiring for a Service Tech I-Meter Reader in the Austin metro area. This entry level position will perform work related to reading meters.
Our company and our customers rely on our Meter Readers. Every month our Meter Readers visit every gas meter placed in the Austin Metro. The accuracy of the readings they take will determine the correctness of our customers’ bills. In this entry level position, we will train you how to utilize our Electronic Reader Transmitter (ERTs) equipment, instruct you on safe driving, and train you on our software programs while you gain exposure to the natural gas utility industry. Although this is an entry level position in our company, we do have certain requirements candidates must meet in order to be successful in this role.
Our Meter Readers are required to climb over obstacles, such as bushes, tall grass, rocks, or concrete barriers to gain access to gas meters. They may also be required to move obstacles obstructing view, and assessing, managing and reacting to potentially hazardous situations including but not limited to dogs, insects, and others.
They will walk six to ten miles per day on all forms of terrain, in all types of weather. This is physically demanding position.
They will communicate with customers regarding usage, observations, service issues and general information in order to provide an excellent customer experience. Our Meter Readers arrive unannounced, so communicating effectively with customers and putting them at ease is imperative.
Our Meter Readers should be in and out of the area in minimal time because our goal is to impact the customer as little as possible while reading the meter accurately the first time so the customer’s bill is always correct.
Our Meter Readers are on a schedule to successfully complete a set number of meter reads each day and this information is transmitted to accounting so our accounting department can send out the monthly usage bills to our customers. Meter Readers must be able to keep to a time schedule to insure all the meters on a route are read on that day. Our Meter Readers work mostly alone and must make decisions to stay on schedule.
They must be comfortable reading maps and have the ability to navigate a route in Austin without the aid of GPS. Our ERTs display only an address regarding the meters in the area, so our Meter Readers must be at ease navigating via addresses and cross streets.
They will install, program, and troubleshoot ERTs. They will also update and maintain reports using a hand-held ERT. Our ERTs are similar to portable electronic devices; therefore our Meter Readers must be comfortable operating and troubleshooting such devices.
They could perform minor preventive maintenance on meters.
We desire someone that is eager to work, with great work ethics. Consistent attendance and accuracy is a must. Candidate must be able to perform the required physical aspect of the job and should have previous experience working outdoors in the elements.
Safety is foremost at Texas Gas Service, so we look for individuals who adhere to the highest safety standards. A valid driver's license, a clean driving record and excellent driving skills are essential for this position.
This position requires mobility to travel on foot and by vehicle; the work environment is almost exclusively outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme conditions. May be exposed to aggressive dogs, so the ability to effectively interact with dogs and assess situations is required.
Our customers deserve the best service, so our goal is to read meters accurately in a specified time frame. In order to accomplish this, our Meter Readers must be task-oriented, self-motivated and have the ability to work unsupervised while staying on schedule.
A good sense of direction and ability to find cross streets and addresses without the aid of a GPS.
Due to the Daylight Savings time changes and extreme weather conditions in the summer, the working hours for this position can change. Expect an 8-hour work day completed between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Opportunities for advancement are available. #fieldoperations
